Millennium School, a new independent middle school in San Francisco, and San Francisco Friends School, an independent K-8 school, are thrilled to host a special event featuring Dr. Dacher Keltner. Dr. Keltner's groundbreaking neuroscience work has applied the tools of modern science to understand well-being - what makes for happy, purposeful young people and adults? Dacher founded the Greater Good Science Center at UC-Berkeley, one of the leading institutes applying this research for parents and educators, and has written several books on the topic, including Born to Be Good: The Science of a Meaningful Life, and the forthcoming The Power Paradox: How We Gain and Lose Influence. He also collaborated with Pixar on the film Inside Out, one of the most compelling presentations of neuroscience as it applies to adolescents.
Dr. Keltner's talk will be geared toward parents with kids approaching or in middle school, as well as educators serving students of this age. There will be a book-signing for The Power Paradox following the main event.

Pop-Up School!
To give both parents and students a taste of our approach to learning, as a new school, we've created a series of "Pop-Up School" days. Students will have the opportunity to participate in a hands-on lesson led by one of our faculty, while parents can observe a portion, and then join a separate forum to ask questions and meet the rest of the Millennium team.
It's also our way to meet prospective students in person, hear their ideas, and see how they engage in an interactive environment of their peers. We highly encourage all prospective student applicants to participate in one of our Pop-Up School Sessions to experience Millennium School in action.
We anticipate space will be limited for these events; please register.

How can educators and parents spark creativity in daily activities? What is the connection between creativity and authentic success?
Tickets are available at www.challengesuccess.org. The past years' events have sold out, so we recommend booking early. The event is open to the public, with adult tickets for $10; student tickets are free.
Salon Series #3: What is Good Health?
What is Good Health?
"Health" class or PE often brings to mind forced runs around the track, or other underwhelming athletic experiences. What if we could step back from this, and ask what it would mean to be deeply healthy physically as an adolescent. Can we expect degrees of mastery from every student in an athletic pursuit? What would we want students to know about what they eat? Is there a place for mind-body practices like yoga or aikido?
This Salon event will be hosted at Avenue, a meeting space at 3361 Mission St. We'll provide light food. Because of the small-group nature of these conversations, we have a limited number of spots available, and ask that you reserve a seat if interested, and please open the seat if you become unavailable to attend. We look forward to a rich conversation!
About Millennium School's Salon Series
Millennium School's Salons are conversations about essential topics in education. In each conversation, a small group of 10-20 people dives into a key topic around what matters most in adolescent education, what school could ideally be, and how to make it happen. We aim to draw a range of people with important perspectives: parents, students, educators, scientists, researchers and others. No expertise in the topic is required; an open and curious mind is all we ask!
Salon Series #2: A Citizen of the World
A Citizen of the World
Most would agree that learning to be a global citizen is an essential element of modern education. But what does this really mean? Can students learn this without travel? If we could do anything, what would an ideal global experience look like for early adolescents? How important are foreign languages in middle school, and can we teach them more effectively than the normal group classes?
This Salon event will be hosted at Sandbox Suites, a co-working space at 567 Sutter St. We'll provide light food. Because of the small-group nature of these conversations, we have a limited number of spots available, and ask that you reserve a seat if interested, and please open the seat if you become unavailable to attend. We look forward to a rich conversation!

Salon Series #1: The Mathematician's Lament
The Mathematician's Lament
Many feel that math is being taught in a way which drains it of the natural awe, curiosity, and power of the subject. In Paul Lockhart's famous essay, "The Mathematician's Lament," he argues that math is closer to an art and should be taught as such. Why do we really study math?
